Welcome

Douglasdale REAL Group is a registered charity, founded in 2012 as a focal point for discussion of aims, ideas and opportunities to enable the progression of recreation, environmental, access and leisure facilities in the Douglas Valley.

Our aim is for this website to not only be a summary of the group and it's work, but also a definitive guide to Douglas Lanarkshire and it's history. We encourage you to get in touch with any stories or pictures you would like to share.

Douglasdale Community Woodland

Douglasdale community woodland is now officially owned and managed by Douglasdale REAL Group!

We at Douglasdale REAL Group would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved.

Clyde Wind Farm Trust (SSE Renewables) who funded the purchase of the woodland and covered our staffing costs.

Duncan Bryden of Bryden Associates, William Gilfillan of WMG Consultancy Ltd and Alison Mackay from Egret Consultancy for the feasibility study and business plan.

REF for funding the feasibility study and business plan.

And to South Lanarkshire Council for facilitating the transfer in its entirety, which concluded earlier this year.

To mark this momentous achievement for the community, the group sourced funding from the micro-grant scheme to make a new replacement sign. On the 17th of October a band of merry volunteers met Dominic, our new Community Development Officer at the woodland to install the new sign and remove some of the old tree guards. The volunteers worked tirelessly to remove numerous trailer loads of tree guards and create the space for our new sign. An outstanding effort has been made by our volunteers, not just on the 17th of October but on many occasions during the whole process of gaining ownership of this valuable community asset. Once again Douglasdale REAL Group thanks you all for your efforts and your support.

Planting Trees at Douglas West Community Woodland

26th March 2021

Last weekend, members of the group visited the Douglas West Community Woodland to do some work. Jobs undertaken were strimming, weeding, litter picking, and the planting of some very special trees.

The trees planted were flowering cherry, their Latin name being "prunus serrulata kanzan". Kanzan is a medium sized deciduous tree, stiffly vase shaped when young, later spreading with coppery young foliage and vivid purple-pink double flowers with a 5cm width opening for crimson buds.

The trees are Japanese and should produce lovely blossoms in April/May.

The group would like to thank the kind Douglas resident for their donation of the trees, and we hope that everyone in the village will benefit from the gorgeous blooms they will bring.
